Athletic Recovery & Performance
Each athletic injury has its own set of symptoms and complications, and is typically caused by trauma or by overuse of a muscle or joint. Athletic injuries come in all shapes and sizes. Among the most common athletic injuries you may experience are knee injuries, anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tears, groin (inner thigh) and hamstring pulls, shoulder injuries, and shin splints. Knee injuries top the list—making up more than half of all athletic injuries. Knee injuries can occur if your kneecap repeatedly grinds against your leg bone. This repetitive movement can damage your kneecap tissues and trigger pain. An ACL tear or strain—which can happen if you suddenly stop or change directions— is another top athletic injury. With ACL injuries, you may experience a popping or cracking noise, swelling, and severe pain. If you’re a tennis player, you may experience tennis elbow, which is caused by the degeneration of tendons in the elbow. Or, if you’re a golf player, you may experience golf elbow, which typically affects the inside of your elbow and is caused by inflammation. If you have swelling, bruising, and pain along the inside of your thigh, you may have pulled your groin from a sudden change in movement or direction. Pain felt behind the knee may be a sign that you’ve overused or overstretched your hamstring, which is made up of three muscles and is located behind your knee. If you’re a runner, you may be familiar with shin splints, which cause shooting pain down the front of your leg and can be caused by a sudden increase in exercise intensity.
