Understanding Shoulder Pain & Injury

One of the most used–and overused–joints in your body, your shoulder is a complex joint comprising of many bones, tendons, and muscles. The shoulder joint’s large range of motion makes it more susceptible to repetitive injury, strain, and everyday wear and tear.

Shoulder pain typically involves your shoulder’s soft tissues, which include your shoulder muscles, ligaments, and tendons. Traumatic injury–such as a dislocated shoulder–is another source of shoulder pain. Injury to the shoulder area often presents as a sudden, sharp pain accompanied by swelling, pressure, or bruising. You may also experience decreased range of motion and stiffness.

Among the most common shoulder injuries are rotator cuff injuries, bursitis, and tendonitis. Your rotator cuff is made up of four small muscles and a network of tendons that help you raise and move your arms. An accident, like a fall, or deterioration over time can lead to a rotator cuff tear, which is quite literally a tear in your rotator cuff tendon. You may also experience bursitis, which is swelling and inflammation of your bursae, small fluid-filled sacs that reduce rubbing and friction as your shoulder muscles, tendons, and bones move. Tendonitis is also common and happens when tendons in your shoulder joints are inflamed and irritated–causing pain and stiffness.
