Understanding Sciatica Pain

Characterized by pain felt along the sciatic nerve’s path–from your lower back, through your hips and buttocks, and down your legs–sciatica affects an estimated 40% of Americans at some point in their lifetime, according to the Cleveland Clinic.

Your body’s longest and thickest nerve, the sciatic nerve comprises five nerve roots that ultimately come together to form a left and right sciatic nerve–with each sciatic nerve running from your lower back region, through your hips, buttocks, and leg until it reaches just below your knee and branches off into other nerves that continue to your feet and toes.

When the sciatic nerve is compressed, pinched, irritated, or inflamed, you experience sciatica pain. Ranging from mild to severe, sciatica pain is often described as stabbing, burning, or shooting and can be felt anywhere along the path of your sciatic nerve.
